Summer School FAQs
Q) What do we do if we have a family vacation planned that will take the student away for more than one day?
- If a student can’t attend at least 9 of the scheduled days of the session, other arrangements should be made to recover credits. Our time is already limited, with only a 10-day session, so students cannot miss more than that.
Q) What if my child gets sick and can not attend?
- The administration can talk to you about excusals for sicknesses on a case-by-case basis, but if the student can’t be in class for at least 8 days, you will need to look for other credit recovery options.
Q) Is there transportation provided for summer school?
- No, there is no transportation provided for summer school. All transportation needs to be scheduled privately in advance. Many students use UTA on demand.
Q) What is the class schedule?
- There are 5 classes offered each session. The first class you register for is a non-attendance class, and it is there to indicate where to send grades upon completion of summer school. Classes go from 9:00 AM to 3:35 PM each day. Classes are 1 hour and 15 minutes long. Please see our calendar and schedule tab for exact class times.
Q) What if my student registers late?
- We allow students to register on the first day of classes or on the start of the 2nd day, but that day missed counts as their 1st absence. They will need to attend all the remaining days to earn credit. You will not be allowed to register after the 2nd day.
Q) How do I know what classes to enroll my student in?
- Summer school is a credit-recovery opportunity, meaning they must have taken and failed the class to attend. When you look at your students' classes, work with their boundary counselor to identify which classes they can remediate. When signing up, it does not matter which quarter they failed; you can remediate any quarter. The only subject where the grade matters is English Language Arts. For example, if they failed ELA in 10th grade, they must sign up for 10th-grade ELA summer school.
Q) Do I need a full schedule?
- No, you do not need a full schedule. You can take anywhere from 1 to 5 classes based on your needs. The registration fee stays the same, but you are charged by class.
Q) How can I adjust my start time?
- The first period is for you to indicate which school to send your grades to upon completing your classes. If you need to start later, just leave the earlier classes blank. For example, to start at 10:20 AM, have your classes start in the 3rd period.
Q) Do students get a letter grade or a Pass Fail option?
- Summer school grades are letter grades, and you will receive the letter grade you earn in the class. If you miss more than one day of summer school, you will automatically fail the class.
Q) What if my student is late or leaves class for an extended period of time?
- If a student is way late, repeatedly tardy, or leaves the class for an extended period of time, they may receive an absence that counts as their one absence. A second absence will result in automatic failure of the class. Make sure you are in class during the day.
Q) What should I do if my student has a conflict or is being mistreated by another student?
- If your child is struggling with a peer, please have them find an administrator. Any acts of violence or bullying will result in students being removed from summer school without a refund.
Q) How do I pay my fees?
- For a tutorial on paying your summer school fee, please see the fee tab on our website. If you need more assistance, please come into our office.
Q) What if I cannot afford the summer school fee?
- If money is tight, you can always apply for a fee waiver, but it must be through your boundary school during the previous school year. We are not able to process any new fee waivers, so they must be done beforehand. We can only accept previously approved fee waivers from the Jordan School District. If you do not have a fee waiver, you will be expected to pay the full amount.
Q) Do students get lunch?
- We usually do not provide lunches during the summer, but for the past 2 years, the Jordan Education Foundation has funded free lunches for students. This means in 2026 there will be lunches provided. There is no lunch break, but students can get a grab-and-go lunch between 3rd and 4th periods to eat in their next class. Students are not allowed to leave during grab-and-go lunchtime.
Q) Does summer school work with the NCAA clearinghouse?
- We are not a registered NCAA school, but please discuss whether or not you could count summer school grades towards eligibility with your boundary school counselor prior to registering.
